I only counted six, seven with the death of James the large ape. You need to watch it to get an understanding of why James, who is obviously a gorilla but referred to as an orangutan, is even part of the plot.

Birkin gives it her best shot as the put-upon Corringa, and Serge Gainsbourg is hilariously cast as a Scottish detective inspector investigating the shady goings-on. Preposterous and completely absurd, but all the better for it.

Superb soundtrack by Riz Ortolani, who uses strings, electronica and big band jazz to great effect.

Mary Woronov sleepwalks through this muddled thriller, set in a town with a dark past. John Carradine is a deaf publisher who holds a deadly secret alongside the sheriff, mayor and telephone exchange operator.

Since its release the film has received some reassessment from various film critics, with praise for its atmosphere and experimental, arthouse qualities, as well as being noted as a proto-slasher, in particular its use of point-of-view shots from the killer’s perspective. A trope that would become common after its inclusion in Bob Clark’s Black Christmas.

A very odd one to really get to grips with, and certainly not one I would consider recommending, unless you are a fan of Mary Woronov. And who isn’t.

A trio of sisters who are part of a cabal of satanic influencers seduce a free-spirited biker who abandons his freedom and ultimately pays the price. Big hair and groovy clothes set the scene for this dreamlike curio of “hippy culture and sexual transgression”.

It looks great, and its general weirdness marks this out as surreally unique.

Edwige Fenech is always great to watch. Nobody comes near her for her beauty, and the camera loves to capture those dark eyes. Definitely one to watch for her alone. Just go along with the stamp-collecting police commissioner and his incompetent detective, part of the cast that punctuate the film for little reason other than to pack out the list of characters.

Italian regular George Hilton plays Edwige’s love interest and chief murder suspect, and they act well around each other. Music is by Bruno Nicolai, known for his contribution to Italian genre cinema.

It is a bloody smorgasbord of nudity, kung fu and a strong female central protagonist seeking “revenge through love, not hate”.

Hailed as the first Chinese sex film, it was remade by the Shaw Brothers in 1984 as Lust for Love of a Chinese Courtesan. Recommended for fans of the Shaw Brothers’ extensive catalogue.

Francesco Barilli was the writer of Man from Deep River, but I don’t think I have come across him as a director before this.

I am noting it as of interest only, but wouldn’t put it on a must-watch list.

An experimental doctor morphs women into sex-crazed queen bees who are wiping out the straight men by heart failure due to sexual exhaustion. They just run down the only gay man in the film with a car, as he doesn’t succumb to their advances.

Contains nudity and big hair. An exploitation favourite of mine.

The film faced numerous problems, with rewrites, the director being physically attacked by Carradine, and Jennings dealing with alcohol and cocaine addiction. Not nearly as smart as Death Race 2000, but the explosions are frequent and the action doesn’t slow down.

Claudia Jennings’ hair does not have a hair out of place despite wearing a bike helmet for a lot of the film, and Carradine gives it his all. Jennings died tragically in a head-on crash in 1979. Carradine described the film as “terrible, my career never really recovered from that blunder”.

Although not a classic, it ranks high in my theoretical post-apocalyptic exploitation list and, as it is often said, they don’t make films like this anymore.

It does contain the immortal lines “don’t get your balls blasted” and “operation sweet death must be considered a complete failure”. There are certainly lots of zombie balls being blasted, and the film should be considered a complete failure.

There is documentary footage of native tribespeople and animal attacks to fill out the running time and to provide some context that this is Papua New Guinea and not some woodland outside Rome, but no one is convinced.

The zombies seem to come in two types: the ones who stumble about unable even to grab, and those who cannot only grab but can open the door of a moving jeep to try and get a bite out of the token female journalist. The journalist character seems to be there to provide the necessary topless scenes, and for one of the not-so-crack SWAT team to hit on. “If we had met in different circumstances, you would be in the sack with me right now.”

As with all these things, the zombies make it from the isolated island to the streets of the city and seem to be everywhere when previously there were none.

I would say the film was slightly redeemed by the inclusion of the soundtrack by Italy’s finest horror prog connoisseurs, Goblin. But even the music is borrowed from their scores to two other films, and not the famous ones either. Watch it at your peril.

Zombie Creeping Flesh is particularly bad, but definitely worth a watch for just what Bruno Mattei is capable of.

Interest in the family estate is raised by the “normal” part of the family, and the true eccentricities come to the fore with deadly consequences.

An early appearance from genre icon Sid Haig as Ralph, and Jill Banner as Virginia is particularly unhinged in her memorable debut.
