Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan (1972) is grindhouse meets arthouse from the prolific Shaw Brothers. Directed by Chor Yuen and starring Lily Ho as Ainu, who is kidnapped and trafficked to work in a brothel.
It is a bloody smorgasbord of nudity, kung fu and a strong female central protagonist seeking “revenge through love, not hate”.
Hailed as the first Chinese sex film, it was remade by the Shaw Brothers in 1984 as Lust for Love of a Chinese Courtesan. Recommended for fans of the Shaw Brothers’ extensive catalogue.
