Prey (1977) is a low-budget sci-fi exploitation film by British legend of the genre, Norman J. Warren. Due to its minimal budget, Warren constructs a tight story around Anders (Barry Stokes) as a shape-shifting, flesh-eating alien and his fraught relationship with a lesbian couple who welcome him into their home. Tensions build in the household as Anders comes to understand the sexual dynamic and gender fluidity acted out between the three characters.
Renowned horror film critic and writer Kim Newman said it is “the most minimal of Warren’s exploitation films, and among the strangest British movies of all time.” It bears all the signs of a horror on a very low budget, and the alien make-up when Anders becomes aroused is laughable, but Warren directs it straight and it is best to accept this odd feature as it comes.
