Amuck!

Amuck! (1972) is an Italian giallo written and directed by Silvio Amadio. Starring Barbara Bouchet, Farley Granger and Rosalba Neri. Greta (Bouchet) arrives at a remote mansion to work as a secretary for Richard Stuart (Granger). Alongside his wife Eleanora (Neri), the couple lead a decadent lifestyle of spiked drinks, homemade stag films and bossa nova beats.

Greta’s girlfriend Sally had been Richard’s previous secretary and mysteriously disappeared. Greta suspects foul play and sets out to investigate. Will Greta, like Sally, become “a victim to her own sexual perversions”? She is caught in a game with the couple where she is played like a wounded mouse.

Amuck! is a tense psychosexual thriller with a softcore lounge soundtrack and a great cast headed by the inimitable Bouchet. The locations are finely photographed and Venice shines as the film’s backdrop.

Amuck! has several alternative titles. The US theatrical release was Maniac Mansion, in the UK it was Hot Bed of Sex and, even more bizarrely, on video as Leather and Whips. Whatever name you see it under, it is certainly worth one hundred minutes of your time.
