The Bloodstained Shadow is a 1978 giallo in and around Venice. The score is by Stelvio Cipriani but performed by Goblin. The music is the lead in this and sets up the tension with its builds and abrupt halts. Cipriani scores the film with lounge, musique concrete and Goblin’s fine-tuned dark avant prog.
The film is peppered with at least two finely executed Lewton bus scares, and the streets and canals of Venice act as a perfect backdrop for stalking and murder.
A real giallo gem that had previously escaped me, even if the final scene feels like a homage to Don’t Torture a Duckling.
